600 EUR a month, the carta de aceptación, and the documents Algiers checks
Spain is the cheapest of the big European destinations to prove you can afford, and the most exacting about the paperwork around it. The financial threshold has not moved since 2023. What ends Spanish student files is almost never the balance: it is an insurance policy with a copayment, a medical certificate missing one sentence, or a criminal record certificate that expired while the appointment was being waited for.
This guide covers the visa as it works now, after the 2025 overhaul of Spanish immigration rules: the acceptance letter, the IPREM amount and what it does and does not include, what a family declaration must contain, the housing document, the two health documents people confuse, and the criminal record certificate that has its own timing trap. Sources are linked so you can check each figure yourself.

8 September 2026. The IPREM is frozen while Spain runs on a prorogued budget, so the monthly figure below is current but not permanent, and each consulate publishes its own checklist on top of the national rules. Confirm on exteriores.gob.es and in the checklist attached to your own appointment before you submit.
The visa you want is a visado de estancia de larga duración por estudios, the study visa for stays longer than 90 days. It covers full-time study at a recognised Spanish institution leading to a diploma or certificate, and also research or training activity, secondary-school mobility programmes, unpaid internships and volunteering.
The rules underneath it were rewritten by Real Decreto 1155/2024 of 19 November 2024, which replaced the 2011 regulation and came into force on 20 May 2025. Two changes matter to an Algerian student. The authorisation for higher studies is now granted for the full length of the programme rather than renewed year by year, which removes an annual cycle of paperwork and an annual chance to be refused. And a student may work up to 30 hours a week alongside the studies without applying for a separate work authorisation, provided the work is compatible with the course.
Applications from Algeria go through BLS International, the Spanish consulate's outsourced partner, which runs visa application centres in Algiers and Oran. BLS states that from 17 April 2026 study visa applications are lodged at the Algiers centre and are taken without an appointment, within the limit of the slots available on the day (BLS International, the consulate's service provider). Treat provider pages as operational information and the consulate's own list as the binding one.
Nothing else in the file counts until this document exists. The carta de admisión, usually called the carta de aceptación, is the admission letter from a Spanish teaching centre, public or private, officially recognised, for a full-time programme leading to a title or a certificate of studies.
The consular template is specific about what has to appear on it, and a letter missing any of these gets sent back:
You also attach the content of the study plan, and proof that the matrícula has been paid. The consular wording on that last point is unusually direct: sin el pago de la matrícula no se recogerá el visado, without the enrolment payment the visa will not be released (exteriores.gob.es, study visa requirements). The visa can be approved and still not handed over.
Recognised is doing real work in that sentence
A Spanish language school or a private academy is not automatically an centro oficialmente reconocido. Before you pay anything, ask the school for the registration that makes it eligible and check that the letter it issues carries the six items above. An acceptance letter from a school outside the recognised list is a refusal you paid for.
Spain does not publish a student-specific euro figure. It ties the requirement to the IPREM, the Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples, and the consular wording is that the applicant must show, for each month of stay in Spain, an amount representing 100 percent of the IPREM per month.
The IPREM has been frozen at 600.00 EUR a month, 7,200.00 EUR a year over twelve payments, since 2023, because no new state budget has been passed and the prorogued one carries the old value forward. So a ten-month academic year is 6,000 EUR and a full twelve-month stay is 7,200 EUR. It is the lowest threshold among the large European study destinations by a wide margin.
Two exclusions decide borderline files. Money used to pay for the studies themselves does not count toward that total: the consular text says the amounts spent on the cost of the studies are not computed for the purpose of guaranteeing subsistence, and you must be able to show the tuition separately. And accommodation is its own line: if needed, you must additionally show you can cover housing during the stay. Where accommodation is demonstrably paid in advance for the whole stay, some consulates reduce the subsistence requirement accordingly, so a paid university residence is worth documenting.
If family members are coming with you, the scale is 100 percent of the IPREM for you, 75 percent for the first family member, and 50 percent for each additional one.
Bank documents go stale fast
Spanish consulates read bank evidence as a snapshot, and several will not accept documents issued more than a few days before the appointment. Ask BLS what the current window is and get the bank certificate re-issued rather than reusing one from the month you gathered everything else.
There are three accepted routes and most Algerian files use the second one.
Whichever route you take, a photocopy of every original goes with it. Spanish consulates run on original plus copy, and the copy has to be made after the document was legalised, not before.
This is where Spain differs most from France and Italy. It does not simply want a signed undertaking from a parent. It wants the money blocked, and it wants the block described in the bank's own certificate. The consular list for the family route has three parts:
Alongside those, write the declaration itself. There is no national form, so it is judged on content. A declaration that works names the guarantor and their relationship to you, states the monthly amount and the total for the stay so both match the bank documents to the euro, explains where the money comes from, says how it will reach you in Spain, and ends with a list tying each claim to its attachment. One page, Spanish, signed by hand.
Blocked means blocked
A bank certificate that says the balance exists is not the document being asked for. The certificate has to say the amount is blocked permanently and irrevocably for you, and the statements have to show it. This is the single most common reason a family-funded Spanish file comes back, and it cannot be fixed at the counter.
The housing requirement is one line and it is easy to satisfy: documentation proving you have accommodation available for the stay in Spain, with the address stated on it, plus a copy. A university residence assignment, a signed lease, or a written declaration from the person hosting you all work, as long as the address is on the page.
Now the confusion. Search for Spanish visa housing documents and you will land on the carta de invitación, a formal invitation letter that a host in Spain obtains from their local police station for a fee. That document belongs to the short-stay tourist visa. It is not part of the study visa file, it does not replace the financial proof, and paying for one because a forum said to is money spent on the wrong procedure.
For a student, a plain host declaration naming the address, attached to a copy of the host's identity document and their proof of address or title to the property, is what the requirement asks for.
These are two different documents and people submit one thinking it covers both.
The insurance. A health policy for students abroad or expatriates, covering the whole of your stay in Spain, for medical expenses and for repatriation arising from an accident or sudden illness. The stated minimum cover across all headings is 30,000 EUR, and the insurer must be authorised to operate in Spain. Many consulates add that the policy must carry no waiting period, no copayment and no cap on cover, meaning it pays 100 percent of medical costs in and out of hospital. Travel insurance sold for a Schengen trip almost never meets this.
The medical certificate. Issued no more than three months before you apply, and it has to carry one specific sentence: that the applicant no padece ninguna de las enfermedades que puedan tener repercusiones de salud pública graves de conformidad con lo dispuesto en el Reglamento sanitario internacional de 2005. The consular text says in as many words that this phrase must appear in the certificate. It must also be issued by a doctor from the list the consulate approves and publishes, and if it is not in Spanish it needs a sworn translation.
Do not translate the sentence yourself
A certificate written in French or Arabic that says something close to the required formula, translated loosely, is a refusal. Take the exact Spanish sentence to the doctor on the consulate's list and have it reproduced. Then get the sworn translation of the whole certificate if the doctor issued it in another language.
If the stay is longer than 180 days and you are above the age of criminal responsibility, the file carries a criminal record certificate. Since a study visa for a full academic year is always longer than 180 days, this applies to essentially every student.
The rules on it are precise and they compound:
The legalisation half of that just got simpler. Since 9 July 2026 Algeria applies the Hague Apostille Convention, so an Algerian public document destined for a state party carries an Apostille rather than going through consular legalisation. In the first phase the scheme covers documents issued by the ministries of Interior, Justice, Higher Education and Scientific Research, National Education, and Vocational Training, and Apostilles are requested on the national platform apostille.gov.dz, at the ministry concerned, or through Algérie Poste (announced by the Italian Embassy in Algiers, 2 July 2026). Your bulletin n° 3 comes from the Ministry of Justice, which is inside that first phase. Your diploma comes from Higher Education, also inside it.
The timing trap is the one to plan around. Three months of validity has to cover the wait for a BLS slot, the wait for the apostille, and the wait for the sworn translation. Collect the certificate last, not first.
Our visa documents generator drafts the three supporting letters a Spanish file needs, in Spanish: the financial support letter that makes a stack of bank documents readable in one page, the accommodation letter for a host putting you up, and the sponsor declaration your guarantor signs. It deliberately never prints a country threshold into a document, which is why this guide exists and carries the date it was checked. Names, passport numbers and identity details never leave your browser.
For the academic half, our Europass CV builder produces the format Spanish universities and internship hosts read without friction, with the CEFR five-skill language grid and a structured education section that lets a Spanish reader place an Algerian Licence or Master correctly. The Europass guide covers the format itself, and the Italy student visa guide is the one to read beside this if you are applying to both: the questions are the same, the thresholds and the paperwork are not.
None of this is legal advice, and no guide replaces the checklist attached to your own appointment. Fennec360 is an Algerian education and immigration agency, and we assemble these files with students every intake. When the paperwork half of a dossier is the part keeping you awake, that is a conversation worth having with a person rather than a page.
One hundred percent of the IPREM for each month of stay. The IPREM has been frozen at 600.00 EUR a month, 7,200.00 EUR a year, since 2023, so a ten-month year is 6,000 EUR and a twelve-month stay is 7,200 EUR. Tuition does not count toward that total and has to be shown separately, and housing is its own line.
Not when your family is funding you. The consular list asks for a bank certificate that names you and states the permanent and irrevocable blocking of the sum to be sent to Spain for the duration of the studies, plus three months of statements in which that blocked amount appears. A certificate that only confirms a balance is the most common reason a family-funded file comes back.
Almost never. The study visa asks for a policy for students abroad or expatriates covering the whole stay, for medical expenses and repatriation after an accident or sudden illness, with minimum cover of 30,000 EUR across all headings and an insurer authorised to operate in Spain. Many consulates add that it must have no waiting period, no copayment and no cap.
Since 9 July 2026 Algeria applies the Hague Apostille Convention, and documents from the Ministry of Justice are in the first phase, so your bulletin n° 3 carries an Apostille instead. The trap is timing rather than legalisation: the certificate must be no more than three months old when the file is submitted, and it needs a sworn translation into Spanish. Collect it last.
